SOUNDS OF WAR 2022
... how the destructive forces of war can terraform and sculpt society into something new.
Sounds of war explores how the destructive forces of war can terraform and sculpt society into something new.
The line of enquiry was triggered by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Working with the proposition ‘How do I repurpose and use found materials to explore the catastrophic impact of war which shatters and destabilises society?’ a series of kinetic experiments with materials that represent artefacts of war were created in order to explore their material properties and how each one activates the senses.
The resulting body of work is derived through a practice-led enquiry into the material potentiality of combining materials to create a multisensory public artwork.
The project uses collected sounds to examine how the destructive forces of war transform, recreate and reform places and societies. The large scale installation includes 21 unique sounds that represent the number of wars currently occurring in the world. The visualisations of the sounds are translated into 3D models that combine to create an experiential and thought-provoking installation.
The project integrates found materials with cutting edge 3D printing technology to transform the sounds of war into a multi-sensory experience for audiences that ‘predicts’ what future cities impacted by war may look like. These are in effect simulations of future worlds transformed through the sounds of war.
